Benefits of Yoga and Meditation

There is a growing body of evidence about the health and mental health benefits of yoga and meditation for people from all walks of life - students, social workers, older adults, youth, and people with chronic illnesses. These practices can strengthen resilience and offer a tremendous resource for self-care and transformation. In the case of mindfulness, research has show how it impacts neuropsychologcial processes such as attention regulation, emotion regulation, and prosocial behavior. Mental benefits include positive impacts on depression, anxiety, memory loss, PTSD, and improved academic performance.

The benefits of yoga include an increase in flexibility, strength, balance, joint health, pain prevention/management, and improved breathing.  As well, regular practitioners of yoga find that yoga can help alleviate anxiety and depression as well as reduce stress, increase mental calmness, and enhance mind-body awareness.  Tim McCall, MD has compiled a list of scientific studies that demonstrate the
effectiveness of yoga in addressing 75 different health conditions.
